The wonders of physio

Kinesio tape62 days to go, and it’s all getting a bit real now. Some of our runners are seasoned pros, but I’ve been lazy in my youth and it’s starting to show. Clocking up distances has revealed a problem with my right leg that needs attention, and I’ve been going to the brilliant therapists at Achilles Heel in Glasgow.

Turns out my pelvis is wonky, but the good news is I don’t have to stop running – just take it easy and work on getting stronger. I strapped my knee up yesterday and did 10 miles, but this evening my physio worked on the IT band and brought Kinesio tape into the mix. Basically, this tape is stretched when it’s applied then retracts, so it helps muscles and tendons that have been under strain to readjust (forgive my bluddy awful explanation of that).

Apparently kinesio tape became popular as a method of increasing blood flow in breast cancer patients who’d had their lymph nodes removed. In those cases the tape helps the body move fluid away, which lymph nodes usually do. Amazing stuff. It looks like duck tape but I can’t even feel it on my leg. Of course it’s not guaranteed to work but I’m excited about a run tomorrow evening to try it out. It’s very frustrating to want to run and be held back by an injury. I guess every distance runner knows this, but I’m learning it for the first time.

Hey ho! I’ve 15 miles planned for this weekend and I won’t be beaten. Still very excited about October.

Thanks for reading, and for all your support.
